The challenges of promoting research on sustainable development: How can scientists benefit from the Swiss Sustainability Platform for Research?

Back to workshop overview

This workshop was intended as a forum for sharing and discussing the specific challenges faced by research on sustainable development. Such challenges include constraints of disciplinary research, limits of dominant research approaches, a lack of networks and scientific debate across academia, difficulties to attract funding, and many others.
The needs emerging from the discussion will be taken into consideration when designing the Swiss Platform for Sustainable Development Research and the services and impulses it is to provide in support of scientists and their universities.

Representatives of various universities briefly presented challenges their university has encountered in the context of research on sustainable development (5’ each, based on predefined questions).
The representatives were:
  • Denise Bienz, Leiterin Fachstelle für Nachhaltigkeit, Universität Basel;
  • Laure Ognois, Directrice de la Recherche, Université de Genève;
  • Michael Stauffacher, Institute for Environmental Decisions, ETH Zurich;
  • Michaël Voegtli, Conseiller personnel de la rectrice, Université de Neuchâtel;
  • Luca Reggiani, Dipartimento formazione e apprendimento, Scuola universitaria professionale della Svizzera italiana (SUPSI).

The presentations were followed by a panel discussion among these representatives (30’) and finally by an open discussion among all workshop participants (30’).
Workshop outcomes will be compiled in a form appropriate for supporting further efforts to promote sustainability research.
