Anchoring inter- and transdisciplinary sustainable consumption research in Swiss universities

Project C1-22

While ‘sustainable consumption’ is a growing area of research, practice and policy-making that has been gaining momentum around the world, combining and indeed transcending disciplinary approaches is necessary. An interdisciplinary Swiss network of researchers working in this field remained to be strengthened, at the time the grant was awarded, and Swiss researchers were underrepresented in international networks and conferences focused on ‘sustainable consumption’. Building on the sustainable consumption research and action initiative (SCORAI), an international platform bringing together researchers and practitioners from different academic disciplines and different professional fields, we aimed to further develop and deliver Swiss-led ‘sustainable consumption’ research proposals through three main steps:
  1. an international workshop was hosted, to identify research gaps related to four key themes in sustainable consumption research (solidarity, energy, food and wellbeing); a white paper was issued as a result, feeding into the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme;
  2. outreach was conducted in Switzerland, leading to a database of academics and practitioners and indicating their research/action interest areas;
  3. collaborations were thus identified, in Switzerland, towards the development of several research proposals; and finally,
  4. two proposals received substantial funding (SNSF, PNR69 on healthy and sustainable food consumption; and a Horizon 2020 project on energy transitions across several European countries, including Switzerland); while several other proposals are currently under review, in collaborating with the key partner, the Research Group Inter-/Transdisciplinarity at the University of Basel.
