Tap it up

Project B1-27

This project addresses the sustainability issue of single serving bottled water consumption. The project aims at promoting the consumption of tap water as the easy and normal choice instead of buying bottled water. The strategy is to make tap water more accessible to people in Lugano, in a first step to students and staff at the Università della Svizzera Italiana (USI), and in a second step to residents and tourists in the entire city.
The project will first be implemented at the university campus. At USI, there are currently no public drinking fountains. Through the installation of water dispensers on campus and the increased accessibility of refillable, sustainable containers, we will decrease the purchases on single serving sized PET bottles and thus reduce plastic waste.
The implementation of "Tap it up" will then be extended to the city of Lugano. A smartphone app will be developed to promote the use of free fountain water, a natural resource already available. The app will contain an interactive map of the city's fountains so that citizens and tourists can locate nearby fountains, and share content, such as ratings, comments, and pictures on the social network.
