Studenten gegen Food Waste

Project B1-33

The project introduces a food bike to the city of Bern with a mission to reduce Food Waste and sensitise the local population about this isue. We use surplus production from agriculture – like misshaped vegetables – to cook menus, which we sell from a food bike. The food bike is a new concept and aims to provide a sustainable alternative to food trucks, which are becoming increasingly popular. For this purpose, we developed a prototype design in collaboration with an industrial designer from the Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz (FHNW). As part of the project we aim to build the prototype to create Switzerland’s first Food Bike that can go into serial production. We engage students from the university of Bern and aim to spin off the project to a Start-Up, with the aim to establish the service in the city and strong roots within the University community. We plan to establish events on a recurring basis, like food waste cookouts or mass potato peeling to engage people actively in reducing food waste and give them a salient experience of how much food is wasted before and after their own doorstep. We will also work on the development of innovative food products that are based on food surplus inputs and help preserve the food to offset seasonality issues.
